HERE WE GROW!

GOOD NEWS

Good news!

Central Scotland Green Network has generously awarded a grant to Friends of Old Station park to establish a rockery. The rockery will be situated at the

presently bare triangle beside the steps leading down to the park from Hyndland Road.

Further, Glasgow City Council Land and Environmental Services have offered to do the groundwork and provide us with the rocks.

Dobbies Garden Centre at Braehead, who have already donated tools, are presently advising us about alpines, aromatic and berry bearing plants.

The aim is to improve the look of an unsightly space, provide all year round colour, sweet smelling shrubs and plants which will attract bird and insect life.

The work has to be completed by early Spring so the volunteers will be busy over the next two months.

WATCH THIS SPACE!

COUNCILLOR GEORGE ROBERTS

Dear Friends,

It is my sad duty to convey to you the news that a true Friend of Hyndland and its Old Station Park died yesterday.

George Roberts, a Glasgow City Councillor for our Ward, passed away peacefully at Gartnavel Hospital after a short illness.

He contributed so much to the benefit of others in his Community.

I am sure I speak for all when I extend our sentiments of condolence to his widow and family.

George first made his presence felt with FOSP when the organisation was first being conceived, and he stayed with us, an active and practical supporter, right up until his illness precluded his involvement.

A Civil Engineer 'to trade', George always played the game with a straight bat for the greater good and that is to be commended and will be remembered.

He gave us advice and encouragement based upon solid foundations, and was aye ready to lend his shoulder to the wheel.

Thoughts are already turning to the ways in which we can further recognise George's contribution.

FRUIT & FAUNA IN OLD STATION PARKI

Last Friday, 5th August, Dave Garner, a Council naturalist visited the park and met myself and Neil Johnston to identify and advise on its present botanical state.

Further useful information on such subjects as tree planting, nesting boxes and feeders was given.

While wandering around the park looking at the trees, to everyone's surprise, orchids were found! Exotica in Hyndland!

The Park is home to a number of unusual fauna and trees and even managed to provided a lunch of wild strawberries! Only one each I'm afraid!

Have a look below at some examples of what was found.

If you can identify any specific additional species please get in touch.
